Here is the question I was asked.."im doing a paper on attainment within ethnic minority groups and was looking at the stark differences in attainment for african and Caribbean children. Caribbean children are performing the worst in the UK wheras African children are 2nd best, I am exploring WHY there is such a difference and though you may have some ideas?"

Mar 2, 2008 - hi, im upset that u think i have some malicious intent about this which i clearly do not, if u look at my response to the "African Caribbean Immigrant Educational Attainment".furthermore its insulting how quick you tried to insult my ethnicity which im also studying why there is a large attainment gap between indians and pakistani/bengalis (not urdu and punjabi - thats a language).clearly i have offended you without meaning to, but i have just used some UK research which i can post link if u wnt

Mar 6, 2008 - Tari: People in Caribbean study, read and value education just as much as Africans. I am from the Virgin Islands. I can tell you that there is a large emphasis on education. What the problem may be is that the UK system is different from the US system. The change for many students may at first be a shock. The Virgin Islands is made up of the British VI and the US VI. When students come from the BVI to the USVI the usually are skipped up a grade. The disparity comes from the different

Mar 6, 2008 - 2 The disparities come from the different educational systems not from the people themselves.

Mar 10, 2008 - Actually African children are in fact also performing badly. The statistics show that that they are performing worse off than White children, Indian children and Oriental Children.
NdiniTari Escribio:
Mar 11, 2008 - Iam not disputing that but I think the question is why? A cause-effect relationship is what we wanna know not to argue on who is better than who.Any answer is true as long as it's accompanied by a logical explanation.
v1o Escribio:
Mar 13, 2008 - No this is what you said. "Caribbean children are performing the worst in the UK wheras African children are 2nd best" African children are not second best according to govt figures.

Jul 13, 2008 - this is what mess some africans up. you always say "we don't have opportunities." there is no such thing as "having opportunities." you create opportunities. black people in america were prevented from writing or reading. despite that they still found a way to make it.they created their opportunities a lack of education does not mean that you will end up pregnant at 15. lots of straight a students do that anyway. this is no disrespect to africans. just my opinion.

Jul 28, 2008 - British Caribbean kids have had it handed to them on a plate. It is all too easy so they throw opportunities away. Not all of them though.i think it is changing now.parents are coming down harder on their kids now.

Aug 23, 2008 - how do you know that? were you raised in a Afro-Caribbean household?
Caribprincess87 Escribio:
Aug 23, 2008 - It is actually true, but african parents push their children harder.
miggy221 Escribio:
Aug 23, 2008 - Caribprincess: Yes i was raised in an Afro-Caribbean household. But you have to admitt, Afrikans are more in-tune with education than Caribbeans and they realise the benefits of a good education.
miggy221 Escribio:
Aug 23, 2008 - This is very true. Also, Caribbeans have been the torch light for progress in therms of black race in the UK.They bore the face of indepth discriminationa, racism and prejudice. While our parents dealth with this in the work place, kids were being passed-over in class.I talk from personal experience.I am first generation Afro-Caribbean and i do have my degree. There are many factors why Afro-Caribbean children are not taking advantage of educational opportunities.
Caribprincess87 Escribio:
Aug 23, 2008 - Yeah, but you can't say all caribs are handed everything on a plate cos thats not true. African children are just pushed a lot harder than us.
Trinikey Escribio:
Oct 14, 2008 - You are correct... I am from the Caribbean and you can survive without a university degree, now I can't talk for all islands because each are unique in their status. Now today as time moves foward education is becoming more of a necessity compare to how it was in the past, because of all the competition... If you do not have an education you will be stuck with some dead end job and catching hell to live.

Oct 27, 2008 - hi sistahs. i think you are both right. from personal experience i know of many afrikan families where failure at school is a big crime. A rod is used to ensure performance, many hours of tuition is also used. some afrikan students abroad grew up that way and to them failure is unforgivable especially if they are from poor families.
