Chapter 18 The boys walked inside of Julie's house. Kevin: Thanks for having us. Joe: We'll be even more thankful when we eat those cheeseburgers! Kevin hit Joe's arm to tell him to be polite. Julie: [slightly laughs] Well, my dad's getting them off the grill now. We can sit at the table, if you want. Kevin: Sure. They all walk to the table. When they are about to go on separate sides, Joe pushes Nick to the side Julie was walking on. That way, he'd have to sit next to her. They took their seats and Julie turned to Nick. Julie: Nick, you've been quiet. What's up? Nick: [turned to his head toward Julie and smiled again because of her smile] Nothing. Julie: Mmmmkay. Nick turned his head back to his brothers. They gave him an expression saying, "Talk to her." Nick just looked down at his empty plate. Joe rolled his eyes, annoyed at his little brother, and peered at Julie. Joe: So, when we were outside, did I hear something about cake? Is that what we're having for dessert? Julie: [smiled big and released a small laugh] Sorry, but we're not having cake. Cake is my nickname my dad gave me when I was four. Kevin: Random nickname. Julie: Not really. On my fourth birthday, I sat in my cake. Ever since then I've been known as Cake to my dad. Nick: [kind of sarcastic] Fascinating. Julie twirled her head toward Nick and gave him a fake angry stare. Then she smiled, indicating she was just joking and that she wasn't really mad. Just a mili-second later, Julie's dad came in the room holding a plate full of cheeseburgers. He set it down in the center of the table. He walked around to the side Julie and Nick were sitting and stood behind Nick's chair. When Chris was about to pull out the chair, he noticed Nick sitting there. Chris: Oh, sorry, Nick. You can sit there. Nick: [stood up] No sir, you can sit here. I'll sit over there next to my...*pushy* brothers. Chris: Oh, erm, okay. If you're sure. Nick: [walking and glaring at his brothers who were glaring back] Oh most definitely, sir. Nick and Chris sat down. There was an awkward silence when... Julie: CUPS!! Everyone burst out into laughter. Julie sat back in her chair. Julie: Well my work here is done. Nick: [still sort of laughing] Cups? Julie: When I went to camp, a girl told me that whenever there was an awkward silence to shout, "Cups!" So, I did. Chris: [to JB] Woo, okay. Well, I'm Julie's dad. You can call me Chris. Help yourselves to the cheeseburgers. Right when Chris said, "Help yourselves" Joe dove for the burgers and grabbed one. Kevin took one after Joe then Nick got one. While Chris and Julie were getting theirs, Julie's mom walked in and sat at the head of the table. Julie: [unexcited] Guys, this is my mom. [She motioned her hands to her mother] Julie's Mom: [looked up and smiled] Oh, hello. I'm Jen. And you boys are...? Julie and her dad looked at each other then at her mom. Chris: Jen, these are the Jonas Brothers! Jen: Oh! Our neighbors that had Julie over for dinner last night! Julie: Not only are they our neighbors, mom, they're a world famous band! Jen moved her eyes to the boys and they smiled and shrugged in agreement. Joe: Well, I wouldn't say we're *that* famous-- Julie: Oh pu-leez. People in Guam know who you guys are. Jen: Oh, well, congratulations boys. Boys: Thank you. Then, everybody dug into their food. Joe was constantly complimenting on the cheeseburgers. Julie's dad also made home-made French fries, which Kevin really seemed to enjoy on a count of the 20 helpings he had. Julie and her family talked about life in New York and the JoBros discussed life in New Jersey and on the road. Julie was always bringing up her friends from NY and all the crazy things they did. For example, Julie told them about the time at lunch her friend Mikayla took some tinfoil and wrapped it around her teeth. Everyone else did that and they called their foiled teeth grillz. [A/N: That really happened! Just look at the video! It's a picture of Mikayla with her grill =)] That story made the whole table laugh. Everybody talked a little bit more, but Nick was silent the entire time. He only laughed at some stories and Julie and her dad dancing to "See You Again" by Miley Cyrus. When everyone was finished eating, Nick stood up. Nick: Well, thank you for having us for dinner. The cheeseburgers were very good, Chris. But, I think we should go now. He looked down at his brothers who just stared back with questioning looks saying, "What are you doing?" Nick: Well, I think *I* should go. And with that, he was out the door. Julie: I'll go talk to him. Then, she too left the house.
